Lecture Abstract
The 2014 Indonesian Presidential Election had reached an impasse as both Jokowi and Prabowo declared victory following preliminary releases of several Quick Count Survey results. Official results of the election will only be announced on the 22nd of July, however most surveys have indicated the Joko Widodo (Jokowi) – Jusuf Kalla (JK) pair as the winner. Regardless of the overlapping victory claim, virtually all versions of various quick count surveys had shown a slim margin between the two. Such result is unprecedented in Indonesia’s presidential election history and raises a number of questions:
What are the direct implications of the slim margin between the two pairs? How severe is the likelihood of conflict between supporters of each pair? What challenges would arise for the new President and Vice President? How would the newly elected President and Vice President select and form their cabinet? What opportunities should be exploited by the newly elected President and Vice President to strengthen their legitimacy and mandate?
We are privileged to have Mr. Yang Razali Kassim (Senior Fellow, RSIS), Dr. BilveerSingh Adjuct Senior Fellow, Centre of Excellence for National Security, S.
