Biography
Dr Stefanie Kam is a Research Fellow in the China Programme at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. Her work explores the securitization of terrorism in East Asia, with a particular focus on China. She is interested in the study of Chinese politics from a comparative political perspective. Her latest peer-reviewed journal article, published in International Affairs, examines the sources for China’s domestic statecraft in Xinjiang. She is also co-editor of the Handbook of Terrorism in the Asia–Pacific (2016) and author of several book chapters on China’s counterterrorism strategy. Her commentaries have appeared in platforms such as The National Interest, East Asia Forum, Channel News Asia, TODAY and The Diplomat.
Stefanie was previously a PhD scholar at the Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy, where she tutored undergraduate and masters-level courses on international security studies at the School of Politics and International Relations, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs and the National Security College. In 2019, she was an ANU-Peking University research exchange scholar, and was also visiting scholar at Fudan University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law and Beijing Normal University.
Stefanie received her PhD from the Australian National University in 2021 and has a Master of Science in International Relations from S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
