Why The Tabligh Is Constantly On The Move
In an opinion piece, Assoc Prof Farish A. Noor at NTU’s RSIS discussed how the Muslim missionary movement Tablighi Jama’ – the religious movement behind the large gathering at Malaysia’s Sri Petaling mosque that caused a COVID-19 scare – is one that encourages followers to move out of their comfort zones by travelling places. It also emphasises social welfare. Assoc Prof Farish said governments should appeal to followers and engage them positively rather than scapegoating or victim-blame them. This way, the group will be able to self-regulate their movements, which can help to contain the virus pandemic.
