Who will Save Hawker Food?
Singapore’s bid for international recognition of its hawker culture deserves support, but senior fellow at RSIS Han Fook Kwang asks what will be left to preserve and promote if hawkers who are now in their 60s and 70s retire in 10 years. High rentals and long hours make the trade unattractive to young Singaporeans. The search for ways to attract younger Singaporeans to the trade and try out new models should continue, he wrote.
