UMNO and PAS: A Forced Political Marriage?

There is an underlying political aspiration to this move of penyatuan ummah – or the unification of the Muslim community – in Malaysia where race and religion have become permanent fixtures in politics. According to Yang Razali Kassim, Senior Fellow at RSIS, the issue of Muslim unity is more critical to United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) than Malaysian Islamic Party (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia or PAS).
