Han Fook Kwang, ST editor-at-large and RSIS senior fellow, wrote that while Singapore can rightfully be proud of its universities being among the top ranked in the world, it is important for both NUS and NTU to develop their own authentic Singaporean characteristic. When universities specialise in issues that people in the country can identify with, there is a natural alignment of interests between them, businesses and citizens.
