Dubbed Dramas Give Turkey the Power of (the) Remote Control

Televised Turkish dramas are all the rage in the Middle East. A young Ottoman TV Empire has been expanding its soft power by harnessing regional dialects, Arabic names and viewers’ desire for racy-yet-traditional plots. In April, just before Ramadan 2020, Prime Minister Imran Khan said Pakistan’s state broadcaster, PTV, would screen Resurrection: Ertugrul, dubbed into Urdu. In turn, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s popularity within Pakistan increased. “An Islamist-Turkey has become the role model for Pakistan,” Dr James M. Dorsey, a Senior Fellow at the RSIS and the Middle East Institute in Singapore, told DW.
