- Coronavirus’ Fallout for HK and Singapore
In a commentary, Dr Friedrich Wu, who is adjunct associate professor at NTU’s RSIS said the unabated spread of Covid-19 will impact both Hong Kong and China. The coronavirus is dealing Hong Kong’s economy a third blow, after the China-US trade war and months-long violent protests and riots. Politically, the Hong Kong government is also beset by an authority crisis, which will hamper the roll out of effective public policies. On the Singapore front, China is the country’s largest trading partner, which makes Singapore extremely vulnerable in the current situation. The ban on visitor arrivals from China, and the predicted fall in tourist arrivals by as much as 30 per cent, will also dampen GDP growth.
