- Best Defence Against Spyware is to Update App, Phone System
The dangers of surveillance software, or spyware, have been thrust into the spotlight after it was reported last week that a flaw in messaging app WhatsApp allowed hackers to install such software on phones, potentially affecting 1.5 billion users worldwide. Mr Benjamin Ang, a senior fellow at RSIS, said there are two kinds of spyware suppliers: entities that sell spyware on the Dark Web, and companies that sell spyware publicly to law enforcement agencies. He added that spyware could be used for good too, like in cases where law enforcement agencies need to access information locked in the devices owned by criminals or terrorists, which can help to avoid disasters, save lives and solve crimes.
