Background Punishments Under Sharia-based Penal Code

The new penal code that took effect in Brunei on Thursday is based on Sharia, which scholars say is a practical guide for Muslims to live by based on the teachings in the Koran.

Sharia “has specific principles and objectives that aim to facilitate justice and harmonious living in the society,” said Mohamed bin Ali, a research fellow at Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
