- Attacks in Orlando: Cruelty to anyone is unacceptable
Religious scholars, social critics and the Muslim community in Singapore condemned the attack on a gay club in Orlando, Florida, as inhumane and denounced any acts of hatred against any group. Ustaz Dr Mohamed Ali, vice-chairman of the Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG) and also assistant professor of the Studies in Inter-Religious Relations in Plural Societies Program (SRP) at RSIS, NTU, said the attack is against the teachings of Islam which is to respect others from different religion, orientation and opinion. He added that the Singapore Muslim community must be rational and support the values of tolerance and be considerate. Ms Saleena Saleem, associate research fellow at RSIS said that Islam, like Judaism and Christianity, has a moral code as a guidance for its followers and that religion should not be imposed on non-believers. Thus, one need to promote values that allow people to deal with differences of opinion with respect and maturity.
