Leaders Held As Myanmar Declares 1-Year Emergency
China Daily-Hong Kong Edition
A year long state of emergency was announced in Myanmar after the detention of senior government leaders on Monday. A declaration signed on Monday morning by First Vice-President U Myint Swe, a former general who is serving as acting president, and announced on the military-owned Myawaddy TV, also stated that state power is being handed over to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing. “We will see pressure from the international community” on the military, said Dr. Alistair D.B. Cook, a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies at RSIS in Singapore.
