- Why Jokowi is Vulnerable Despite Enjoying a Strong Incumbency
On the surface, incumbent president Jokowi Widodo currently seems to be in a very strong position in Indonesia’s presidential election campaign, now passing the halfway mark. Using the advantage of his incumbency, he is able to marshal more political support compared to his opponent retired Lieutenant General Prabowo Subianto, wrote Dr Alexander R Arifianto, who is a research fellow with the Indonesia programme at RSIS, NTU. However, evidence on the ground indicates that this election will be much closer than what most pollsters and pundits have anticipated, with Mr Widodo vulnerable to attacks from Mr Subianto’s camp on his economic records and on his Islamic credentials.
