Time Running Out for 53 Crew On Missing Indonesian Submarine
Malay Mail (from AFP)
Indonesian warships led the hunt today for a submarine that went missing with 53 crew aboard and only enough oxygen for a few days. The crew on the KRI Nanggala 402 could have enough oxygen until early Saturday, but time was quickly running out as rescuers scoured the coast off holiday island Bali where it disappeared. Damage to the submarine’s fuel tank could spell big trouble. “If your tank’s cracked it is not very good news,” said Dr. Collin Koh, a naval affairs specialist and Research Fellow at RSIS. “Because we are talking about the pressure hull of the submarine being breached. So it could cause potential flooding.”
