South China Sea: Why Did the PLA Land Its Massive Y-20 Warplane on Fiery Cross Reef?

China flew its biggest warplane, the Y-20 transporter, to Fiery Cross Reef in the disputed South China Sea on December 25, satellite images show. Dr Collin Koh, a research fellow at RSIS, said the Y-20 was capable of carrying heavy military equipment like armoured vehicles and missile launchers. “However, without more info on the cargo it’s just speculation as to what mission the airlifter conducted [at Fiery Reef],” he said.
