- Singapore Investing Billions to Upgrade Air Force
Singapore is spending more on the development of its Air Force than fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, investing more than U.S. $6.5 billion through 2021, according to Jane’s Defense Budgets.
Ben Ho Wan Beng, a researcher with the Military Studies Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, discussed the modernization effort in a talk with FORUM.
“The main objective of the RSAF is to transform itself into a third-generation — or 3G — force,” Ben Ho said. “This is part of an overall effort to make the Singapore Armed Forces become more networked and integrated. The 3G RSAF endeavor is not merely about acquiring the latest technologies and assets, it also involves the revamp of operating concepts, organizational structure and other nonplatform-based areas.”
