Rising Pork Prices a Crisis for China’s Leadership
A top government priority in China now is making sure the Chinese people can afford pork to fill their bellies, in light of soaring pork prices. Observers list soaring pork prices in the same breath as other pressing challenges China faces, including the trade war with the US and the unrest in Hong Kong. S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies research fellow Zhang Hongzhou told ST that food-induced inflation poses a “dire threat to (China’s) socio-political stability”, and is viewed as a national security issue by the leadership.
