Coinciding with the 72nd anniversary of its founding, on 23 April the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) commissioned three warships emblematic of its naval ambitions – a Type 075 LHD, a Type 055 guided-missile cruiser and a Type 094 SSBN. Commissioning three capital vessels in one go is unprecedented, and their total tonnage comes to at least 60,000t. Dr. Wu Shang-Su, a Research Fellow at RSIS, told Shephard that the Type 055 was for long-range operations and mainly for conventional consideration. “For low-intensity missions in remote areas, current frigates and destroyers would be enough. The large capacity of firepower and absorbing attacks would either cover Chinese aircraft carriers or form a smaller combat group as an alternative when aircraft carriers are unavailable,” Wu said.
