If the U.S. Navy Sinks Iranian Gunboats in the Persian Gulf, What Might the Outcome Be?
To date, the U.S. Navy has responded to harassment by gunboats of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with escalating actions, including sending warnings by radio as well as firing warning shots. Richard A. Bitzinger, visiting senior fellow at RSIS, said that if the U.S. Navy, whether provoked or not, decides to attack Iranian gunboats, it could easily lead to an escalation of hostilities.
