GLCs and Patronage: Understanding Mahathir’s Position on HSR and ECRL
It is premature to think that Malaysia’s relations with China and Singapore may enter a phase of heightened uncertainty because of its Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s move to defer several mega-infrastructural projects, including the High Speed Rail (HSR). Rather, his moves are about fixing the structure of the domestic political economy, wrote NTU RSIS research analyst Prashant Waikar in a commentary. Currently, those positioned to benefit from the major infrastructural projects are companies close to former Prime Minister Najib Razak, and Dr Mahathir has little interest in giving Najib’s allies business opportunities, he added.
