- Beijing Vows Revenge if U.S. Reneges on One-China Policy
Chinese official tabloid Global Times has sounded a warning to American President-elect Donald Trump hours after Taiwan’s President transited in Houston, saying that Beijing would “take revenge” should Washington renege on the one-China policy, while adding that it is prepared to break diplomatic ties.
“Sticking to (the one-China) principle is not a capricious request by China upon US presidents, but an obligation of US presidents to maintain China-US relations and respect the existing order of the Asia-Pacific,” said a Global Times editorial on Sunday. The influential tabloid is published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily.
Mr Trump triggered protests from Beijing last month by accepting a congratulatory telephone call from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and questioning the United States’ commitment to China’s position that Taiwan is part of one China.
… Mr Harry Sa, a research analyst with the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, told TODAY that “a meeting with Ted Cruz does hit that sweet spot (for Taipei) where he is high profile enough for the meeting to attract attention but, at the same time, isn’t part of Trump’s transition team or seriously linked with any Cabinet position”.
