- Analysts: North Korea Must be Serious About Denuclearisation for Talks to Go On
The collapse of the summit in Hanoi between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, was mainly due to the disagreement on the lifting of sanctions for North Korea and its denuclearisation process. Assoc Prof Li Mingjiang from RSIS said that the Americans’ discovery that there were other nuclear facilities apart from Yongbyon, which they brought up at the Hanoi meeting, “destroys the cautious, optimistic view among decision-makers in Washington that Kim is ultimately seriously committed to denuclearisation”. RSIS assoc research fellow Shawn Ho added that for the North Koreans, this process with the US is “a rare opportunity” that would not come again any time soon.
