A surge in piracy incidents in this waterway highlights the need for more action. But, given the extra-territorial nature of piracy, a regional approach is needed. Dr Rohan Gunaratna, professor of security studies at RSIS in NTU, said that while the Singapore coast is quite well protected, the Malaysian and Indonesian coastlines are much longer and require more resources to protect.
