- 30 Years After SQ117 Hijacking, Threat Has Grown More Complex
Despite the authorities here uncovering numerous terror plots targeting Singapore, the SQ117 hijacking in 1991 remains the last attack in the Republic. But experts warn against complacency, adding that the terror landscape has changed significantly and the threat situation has become more complex. Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna, Head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at RSIS, said stimulus-seeking youth psychology mixed with the ready accessibility of online propaganda of a range of extremist ideologies enable such self-radicalised actors. Assistant Professor Mohamed Ali, also from RSIS, worries about unplanned lone wolf attacks. The social, economic and political issues worldwide that fuel extremist propaganda and terrorist plots have not dissipated during the pandemic. For instance, vaccination inequality between Israel and the territories in Gaza and the West Bank has sparked anger among some in the Muslim world, noted RSIS Research Fellow Muhammad Faizal Abdul Rahman in a recent commentary for The ASEAN Post.
