The Link Between Masculinity and Violent Extremism
Singapore faces a threat of self-radicalisation, particularly of young men, through extremist ideologies on social media, writes S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies senior analyst Sara Mahmood.
And the male-dominated nature of violent extremism is linked to extremist groups’ propaganda that urges men to fight in order to prove that they are “real men” — a version of manhood also referred to as toxic masculinity, she adds.
