The Hero We Need: Hang Tuah the “Model” South-east Asian
The story of Hang Tuah, the legendary 16th-century Malay warrior, is well-known in many parts of South-east Asia, but few have read the Hikayat Hang Tuah in its entirety. The Hikayat Hang Tuah presents us with an example of a hero whose courage stems not from strength of arms, but the ability to live in a complex and changing world, wrote NTU History and RSIS Assoc Prof Farish A Noor in a commentary. The story speaks to us until today, and beckons us to look at the world around us with courage in our hearts and an open mind, he added.
