Southeast Asia Eyes US Call for TikTok, WeChat Bans with Caution

The US government’s recent push to remove Chinese apps from American app stores is being watched intently in the region for any signs that Washington might pressure its Asian allies into imposing similar policies. Benjamin Ho, an Assistant Professor at the RSIS, predicted that “no Southeast Asia country would put the squeeze on Chinese apps” – though he did suggest some might have their militaries, or other organisations that handle sensitive information, take extra steps to safeguard their work.
