Lockdowns Put ASEAN’s Self-Sufficiency in Spotlight
COVID-19 has forced most Southeast Asian governments to lock down their countries to stem the rise of infections. COVID-19 “has acted as a catalyst” for Southeast Asia’s food security policy, said Professor Paul Teng, Adjunct Senior Fellow at RSIS, in Singapore. He said the outbreak has prompted all countries to ensure food supply chains, “irrespective of whether the food is imported from overseas or moved from one part of the country to another”.
