Rice is such a huge part of food security that countries have tried persuading citizens to be less dependent on the staple. Indonesia tried to push for that in 2012 to ameliorate rising rice prices. Dr Paul Teng, Professor, Adjunct Senior Fellow and food security expert at the Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies at RSIS remembered Singapore trying to get people to eat more bread or noodles instead of rice in the 1960s.
