While relations between China and Japan are improving, there are issues of history and strategic antagonism that could limit the progress. There are strong reasons and circumstances that have led to the current improving ties between the two neighours and regional rivals. RSIS Assoc Prof Li Mingjiang said the strategic environment for China has grown more challenging, particularly as the US is intent on promoting the Indo-Pacific strategy, and there is a possibility of Japan joining and supporting it.
