Chinese Coastguard Ships “Deliberately Visible in South China Sea to Assert Sovereignty”
Some Chinese coastguard ships deployed in the South China Sea have deliberately made their presence obvious to rival claimants to the waters by turning on tracking signals – a move analysts described as an attempt to assert sovereignty. Collin Koh, a research fellow at the RSIS in Singapore, said allowing the coastguard vessels to be seen was a demonstration of jurisdictional control, and could have a debilitating effect on non-state actors, especially fishermen of those countries who usually operate in their exclusive economic zones.
