In a feature about the disputed quick count results in the Indonesian presidential elections, it was pondered if social media forecasts will produce more accurate indication of voter preferences. Jennifer Yang Hui, Associate Research Fellow at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), told Channel NewsAsia that social media analysis should be taken with caution due to the “noisy” nature of the platforms. “Social media sentiment analysis is mired with issues. For example it is difficult for the algorithm to detect accurate sentiment implicit in language such as sarcasm, which may be categorised as positive when the user actually meant the exact opposite,” she said.
