- Myanmar: Suu Kyi’s Aide Held As ASEAN Urges Democracy
Following the coup, the human rights body of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has urged Myanmar to uphold and abide by the values enshrined in the organization’s charter and the declaration on human rights. “We recall the purposes and principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter, including adherence to the rule of law, good governance, and the principles of democracy and constitutional government,” the bloc’s Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights said in a statement issued on Friday. The statement was jointly released by the right commission’s representatives including, Yuyun Wahyuningrum from Indonesia, Eric Paulsen from Malaysia, Dr. Shashi Jayakumar, Senior Fellow from RSIS, and Amara Pongsapich from Thailand.
