Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has twice lashed out at his nation’s largest trading partner in the past week, urging China to “rethink” and “temper its behaviour” in the disputed South China Sea. “I figure someone in his cabinet may be telling him to try at least to put up appearances that he is not a Chinese lapdog,” said Joseph Franco, a research fellow at the RSIS in Singapore, who worked previously for the chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
