Govts Tread Fine Line in Regulating Social Media
As social media companies face criticism over their failure to clean up the content on their platforms, such as hate speech, governments are stepping in to exert regulatory authority over them. Mr. Benjamin Ang, a Senior Fellow at RSIS, noted possible self-interest on the part of big tech firms, saying: “They advocate self-regulation first, but also welcome regulation if they can use compliance to avoid liability.” He added, however, that no entity should be above the law. “Governments are the first choice to impose regulation because they represent the societies of the countries.”
