Facebook will launch a new operations centre here to monitor and manage content related to political elections in the region, a move observers see as a step in the right direction to fight fake news. It will be one of two such new regional centres in the world, the other being in Dublin, Ireland. Associate chair of research Prof Alton Chua of NTU’s WKWSCI said that every piece of emerging information during an election had the potential to tilt users’ perceptions either in favour of or against candidates. However, Dr Shashi Jayakumar, head of the Centre of Excellence for National Security at RSIS, said the social media giant should try to stay ahead of the curve in outmanoeuvring adversaries who manipulate its platform.
