About the Workshop:
The conference reflects on multi-level rivalry in East and Southeast Asia between major powers. We are living in turbulent times as the balance of power is shifting in the region and there is much uncertainty about the new Trump administration. Ranging from maritime security to regional free trade agreements, the atmosphere is filled with tension. The liberal rules-based world order is being challenged and this region is one of the front lines. Given this geopolitical instability it is necessary for all actors to rethink their foreign policy with regard to East and Southeast Asia. How to view the traditional power triangle of US-China-Japan? What should the role of the EU be? Can ASEAN centrality survive? And what are the threats and opportunities?
