About the Workshop
The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Centre for Multilateralism Studies (CMS), RSIS, will be having the three-day workshop for regional parliamentarians on international trade. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Temasek Foundation and the WTO secretariat and will take place in Singapore from 11 to 13 June 2019. This tenth edition of the workshop will include fifty Members of Parliament from ASEAN, Asia and the Pacific Islands.
This capacity-building workshop is intended to enhance the regional legislators’ ability to engage in international trade issues. This includes a deeper understanding of the WTO, and current and future negotiating issues in international trade.
Each of these components is important, as parliamentarians have an important role to play in facilitating trade. Legislators must consider and ratify international agreements as well as ensure domestic implementation of all agreements reached at the international level. They also serve as a bridge between domestic audiences like business or consumer interests, and intergovernmental trade organisations like the WTO. The workshop will also provide participants with new opportunities for networking.
