Lecture Abstract:
The first round of the 2017 Jakarta Governor’s Election was concluded on 15 February 2017. Two finalists emerged from the first round: Mr Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, supported by the coalition of President Jokowi’s Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) and Dr Anies Baswedan, supported by the coalition lead by Gerindra Party of Mr Prabowo Subianto. The second round of the election is scheduled to be held on 19 April 2017.
We are delighted to have Dr Syafiq Hasyim, a lecturer from Department of International Relations, Syarif Hidayatullah State University, Jakarta, to share his insights regarding first round election’s results, issues that being discussed and debated by the two candidates, how Jakarta voters are viewing the candidates, the likely result of the second (and final) round of polling, and what are its potential implications for the future of Indonesian politics.

Dr Syafiq Hasyim is a Lecturer with the Department of International Relations of Syarif Hidayatullah State University, Jakarta. He obtained his doctorate from Berlin Graduate School of Cultures and Societies, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
