Lecture Abstract:
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, who is also the president of UMNO, is facing serious political challenges. Since taking over from former premier Abdullah Badawi, Najib’s standing as leader of both UMNO and the Barisan Nasional government has been negatively affected by increasing economic troubles, poor political performance in the last General Election, and strong political competition from the opposition camp. In addition, Prime Minister Najib is confronted by swelling internal dissent within UMNO due primarily to the weakening voters’ support for the latter. Given these issues, a question has arisen as to whether Najib can weather the political storm and preserve his position as Prime Minister at the upcoming General Elections. This seminar seeks to address the political prospects of Najib Razak and UMNO’s future in Malaysian politics. It will discuss the current state of relations between Najib and UMNO, and examine how the dynamics of these political developments would impact UMNO and Malaysian politics in general.
