Two years have passed since the Fukushima nuclear accident. Since then, Japan’s energy policies have shifted from one that is pro-nuclear to one that is fossil fuel-oriented. However, recent events point to the likelihood of a possible reactivation of the country’s nuclear energy sector.
Elsewhere, in Southeast Asia, civil nuclear energy policy has also witnessed a sharp swing. Prior to the Fukushima incident, several ASEAN member states had been actively pursuing nuclear energy but the Fukushima incident compelled some to re-evaluate their plans. Now, however, the momentum has reversed, with Southeast Asian states looking into restarting their nuclear projects. The same observation can also be made for other regions, the Middle East and North Africa, parts of Europe, and the Asia-Pacific.
Against this backdrop the Energy Studies Institute (ESI) at the National University of Singapore and the RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies are co-organising the International Conference on Nuclear Governance Post-Fukushima to analyse the impact of the Fukushima nuclear accident on nuclear governance, based on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) 3S of Security, Safeguards and Safety.
Specifically, the conference aims to do the following:
- Identify and articulate critical emerging international and regional trends in energy security policies post-Fukushima;
- Assess the impact of global nuclear developments on the security landscape in Asia; and
- Recommend critical areas for future policy research.
Speakers include representatives from international and regional energy organisations, the private sector, academe and civil society. We invite interested persons to join us in what promises to be a stimulating discussion on the future of nuclear governance.
