The COVID-19 pandemic has pulled back the curtain on China’s advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) applications. A glaring example is AI’s critical role in helping the Chinese authorities enforce contact tracing and quarantine measures. This achievement shows the success of China’s efforts to become a potential world leader in AI by 2030. Yet, little is known about the grand strategy that will bring that goal to fruition. In that regard, it is worth examining how China plans to realise its AI ambition. This research project aims to unpack the implementation of China’s AI education at various school levels – primary, secondary, and tertiary education – to ascertain how it is central to the country’s AI push. It also aims to examine how the country’s AI education can position the Chinese economy to gain from the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
