Sixth NADI Meeting 2013
The Sixth NADI Meeting was hosted by the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS) at the Rizqun International Hotel, Brunei Darussalam on 5-7 March 2013. The meeting was chaired by Muhammad Shahrul Nizzam Umar, Acting Director, SHHBIDSS. Delegates from the defence and security institutions of nine ASEAN countries attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed and achieved consensus to further enhance NADI’s role as a Track II organisation of the ADMM. Ampuan Yura Kasumawati Dato Paduka Adnan, Head of Research Division, SHHBIDSS, presented on the Terms of Reference for NADI, a document outlining the guidelines for hosting and organising NADI activities. Tan Seng Chye, Senior Fellow, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), also presented an RSIS paper on ‘‘The Establishment of NADI, NADI Secretariat, NADI Website, and the agreed guidelines for NADI Annual Meetings and NADI Workshops and Seminars”. The meeting agreed on both documents serving as references for NADI participants. At the meeting, NADI delegations shared their views on the regional defence and security outlook, as well as the future of defence cooperation.
At the Sixth NADI meeting, NADI’s inaugural informal dialogue with the ADSOM Working Group Chairman, Hj Adi Ihram Dato Paduka Mahmud, was held over dinner on 6 March 2013, hosted by Muhammad Shahrul Nizzam Umar. They exchanged views on the regional political-security architecture and cooperation. It was agreed that future NADI Chairmen would arrange an informal dialogue with the ADSOM Working Group Chairman on the sidelines of the annual NADI meeting. As the host of the Sixth NADI Meeting, SHHBIDSS also agreed to inaugurate the NADI Retreat in mid-August 2013.
