NADI Workshop on Security and Development: A Foundation for an ASEAN Community

“The NADI Workshop on “Security and Development: A Foundation for an ASEAN Community”, organised by the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security (MiDAS), was held at the Royale Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 10 to 13 June 2013. Lieutenant General Dato’ Dr William Stevenson, Chief Executive MiDAS, who chaired the workshop, delivered the opening remarks.

The Workshop focused on two main aspects. The first was on presentations by some NADI members on their national perspectives on national security and the relationship between security and development. The second was on NADI members’ relations with the external powers and how they could cooperate to promote regional security and to deal with trans-national issues, maritime security and so on. A peaceful region could facilitate national development and national security. The NADI members exchange views on the role of the militaries in NADI member countries in their national security and development, and recommendations were suggested in this regard.
