RSIS, with the New Zealand High Commission of Singapore and World Scientific Press, co-hosted a Distinguished Book Launch of “Perspectives of Two Island Nations: Singapore-New Zealand” edited by RSIS Adjunct Senior Fellow Dr Anne-Marie Schleich, on 21 June 2024.

The book editor, Dr Anne-Marie Schleich, was a German career diplomat posted to Singapore from 1982 to 1985 and was the German Ambassador to New Zealand from 2012 to 2016.

Guest-of-Honour at the book launch was Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, who spoke about the close ties between Singapore and New Zealand and emphasised the importance of committing to a partnership that “remains relevant and well-poised to address the challenges of the future”.

Dr Schleich embarked on the book initiative at the suggestion of Ambassador-At-Large, Professor Tommy Koh, who was also present at the book launch. Singapore and New Zealand are island nations that share many similarities and have enjoyed close relations for almost sixty years. Both face global challenges in today’s less stable world. Spurred on by her passion and commitment toward both countries, Dr Schleich worked with 27 distinguished experts to trace each country’s approach on foreign policy, defense, trade cooperation, economic challenges, climate change, the arts, and ageing societies.
