Research Programmes
CENS’ key focus is on the policy-relevant, multidisciplinary application of national security research. CENS conducts research in four main domains:
- Cyber Programme – which focuses on policy-related issues pertaining to cybersecurity as well as new trends and challenges in the fast-changing world of digital technology. The primary areas of inquiry are international cyber norms, emerging cyber threats, smart cities, cyber governance and legislation, artificial intelligence, and cybercrime.
- Homeland Defence Programme – which focuses on research that enhances the resilience of key niches of the national security ecosystem. The main areas of inquiry are Strategic Communication and Social Media Analysis.
- Radicalisation Studies Programme – which examines the processes of radicalisation to violence of individuals and groups. It takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the radicalisation process, cognisant that it is the complex interweaving of social and political dynamics as well as the personal that leads one to regard the use of violence as a legitimate means of protest.
- Social Resilience Programme – which examines both the concept of resilience in framing national security as well as the constitutive elements of social resilience such as multiculturalism, citizenship, class, and immigration. It takes a multidisciplinary approach in its research and employs multiple research methodologies.
