CENS Team’s Networking Trip to Europe

Place: Berlin, Paris, The Hague and London
Between 10-17 September, a CENS team comprising Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna (Head), Senol Yilmaz (ARF), Joseph Franco (ARF) and Jennifer Yang Hui (ARF), visited a number of leading think tanks and university research institutions, and government departments in Berlin, Paris, The Hague, Oslo and London. The aim of the visit was to keep tabs on latest research trends and thinking in Europe in radicalization and resilience studies, strategic and crisis communications, and cybersecurity policy. Associate Professor Ramakrishna gave talks at the well-known Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) near Oslo, as well as the Quilliam Foundation, the leading counter-extremism think tank in London. The trip proved very useful in consolidating and expanding the important European node of CENS’ growing global network of leading policy-oriented research centres.
Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna (Head), speaks at a workshop on Countering Violent Extremism

From 28 to 30 August 2012, Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna (Head) was at a workshop on Countering Violent Extremism organised by the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Counterterrorism (SEARCCT), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. He spoke on definitions and manifestations of violent extremism and lessons of the Malayan Emergency (1948-60) for countering today’s violent extremists. The workshop was attended by about 30 officials from various Malaysian national security agencies and universities.
