NADI Workshop on New Trends in Terrorism: Challenges and Responses

The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) hosted the Track II Network of Asean Defence and Security Institutions (NADI) Workshop on “New Trends in Terrorism: Challenges and Responses” on 26-28 January 2015 at Hotel Jen Tanglin, Singapore.

All NADI delegations except for Myanmar and Vietnam which were represented by their Defence Attaches, gave presentations on their national level perspectives of terrorism challenges and their responses. The delegates had an active exchange of views following their presentations and they also agreed on the recommendations to be made to the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) track.

The NADI workshop was timely in view of the emergence of new terrorist groups including ISIS, and increasing terrorist activities in recent years in many areas of the world including in Southeast Asia. Therefore, in responding to these threats, governments should take a whole-of-nation approach and build up their preparedness and capacities. All the relevant security agencies including the military, will have an important role to play. The militaries of the Asean countries could also cooperate more closely to respond to the threats.
