The NADI Workshop on “The Value and Role of Military History in Enhancing, and Maintaining Peace, Security, and Practical Cooperation in the Region”, organised by the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs (GDPFA), Ministry of National Defence, Cambodia, was held from 12 to 13 October 2021. Lieutenant General Nem Sowathey, Deputy Director-General, GDPFA, and Director of the Sena Techo Unit, Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia, chaired the Workshop.

The delegates shared their perspectives on national and regional military history. The delegates underscored how ASEAN Member States (AMS) could learn from the military history of their respective countries or the Southeast Asia region in order to foster confidence building, defence diplomacy and conflict prevention. The delegates provided recommendations, for the consideration of the ADMM, to enhance common appreciation of the rich diversity of military history in the region among AMS, and to encourage the study of military history through collaborative knowledge-sharing activities, including workshops and conferences, as well as institutional exchanges and networks.
