The NADI Workshop on “Strengthening Defence Cooperation in ASEAN Health Security”, organised by the Strategic Studies Center (SSC), National Defence Studies Institute, Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, Thailand, was held from 17 to 19 August 2021. Air Vice Marshal Poomjai Leksuntarakorn, Director of SSC, chaired the Meeting.

The delegates shared their respective country’s experiences in dealing with COVID-19, as well as perspectives on how AMS can prepare for future pandemics and other health emergencies. Delegates agreed that within AMS, strong multi-sectoral responses were needed. Delegates also agreed that we would all benefit from more cross-border, regional and international cooperation in dealing with the pandemic. Some delegates highlighted that the military should play a supporting role to the civilian health sector in pandemic responses. Other delegates highlighted the role of the ASEAN Center for Military Medicine (ACMM), including how it can enhance its role in coordinating responses to the pandemics. The delegates provided recommendations, for the consideration of the ADMM, to strengthen ASEAN cooperation on tackling COVID-19 and future pandemics.
